How to Know If Your Dog is Ready for Daycare

Are you considering enrolling your dog in daycare but aren’t sure if they’re ready? At 4 Paws Inn & Hotel, we understand that each dog is unique, and knowing if daycare is the right fit can feel like a big decision. Daycare offers an excellent opportunity for your dog to socialise, burn off energy, and get the mental stimulation they need. But how do you know if your dog is ready to join in the fun?

In this blog, we’ll walk you through the signs to look for and how our free assessment can help determine if daycare is the right choice for your furry friend.

1. Your Dog is Social with Other Dogs

One of the best indicators that your dog is ready for daycare is how they behave around other dogs. If your dog enjoys meeting new dogs, plays well with others at the park, or gets excited at the sight of other pets, then daycare could be a perfect fit.

  • Playful dogs thrive in daycare, as they get to interact with others in a controlled environment.

  • If your dog has had positive experiences with other dogs in the past, they are likely to enjoy daycare and the opportunity to make new friends.

However, if your dog is shy or hasn’t had much exposure to other dogs, don’t worry! That’s where our free assessment comes in to see how they react in a daycare setting.

2. Your Dog Has a Lot of Energy

Does your dog have the energy to spare? If you find that regular walks and playtime at home aren’t enough to tire them out, daycare can provide the extra exercise and activity they need.

  • Dogs that are full of energy can benefit from group play and structured activities at daycare, helping to keep them physically and mentally stimulated.

  • A full day of play at 4 Paws Inn will leave even the most energetic dogs satisfied and content when they come home.

If you notice that your dog gets restless or bored easily, daycare could be a great way to keep them engaged and happy.

3. Your Dog is Comfortable in New Environments

Some dogs may be a little unsure in new places, but if your dog adapts easily to new environments, they will likely settle into daycare quickly.

  • If your dog is used to visiting different locations, such as friends’ homes, the park, or pet-friendly stores, they may handle the transition into daycare well.

  • For dogs who are a bit more cautious, our free assessment offers a chance for them to get comfortable with the daycare environment at their own pace, without any pressure.

4. Your Dog is Well-Behaved Around People

At daycare, your dog will interact with not just other dogs, but also our trained staff. If your dog is generally comfortable and well-behaved around people, daycare could be a great fit for them.

  • Dogs that are friendly and comfortable with people will enjoy receiving attention, care, and affection from our team during their stay.

  • Even if your dog is a little shy around people, our assessment can help us determine the best way to introduce them to the environment, ensuring they feel safe and loved.

5. Your Dog Has Been Trained with Basic Commands

Daycare is much easier (and more enjoyable!) for dogs who have learnt basic commands like sit, stay, and come. Having these foundations in place allows our staff to manage group play and ensure all dogs are safe and respectful during interactions.

  • If your dog has had some basic training and understands these commands, they’ll likely adapt to daycare smoothly.

  • But don’t worry if they’re still learning! Our team is here to work with them and reinforce positive behaviour throughout their daycare experience.
